Apply: Literacy, Language, and Learning PhD

The Literacy, Language, and Learning program uses rolling admission with year-round deadline, and will review students for a possible admission to the upcoming semester when all application materials are submitted. We recommend that prospective students apply early by January for a start in the fall semester, particularly if students are looking for funding through a research or graduate assistantship.

Admissions has implemented a new online application process called Slate. Please contact the Department of Educational Psychology if you have any concerns.   • Graduate Application:Apply online here: https://futureu.admissions.utah.edu/apply/. The application fee is $55 for domestic applicants or $65 for international students.
    • Select Educational Psychology as the program and Literacy, Language, and Learning PhD, as an emphasis.
    • Transcripts: Please upload your transcripts into the web application. These are unofficial, scanned images. (After you are admitted by the program, you are required to submit official transcripts for an official process.)
  • GRE Scores: We require the writing section score of GRE. Please plan to take the test at least one month before your application date, as it takes an average of three weeks to get your scores back. This test is administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS). Your GRE Scores must be forwarded to the University of Utah (Code 4853) by ETS. Personal photocopies are not sufficient. For more information you may contact ETS or your university's testing center.
  • Curriculum Vitae/Resume: A CV is a detailed overview of your accomplishments, the ones most relevant to the realm of academia. Submit a CV with the most updated information possible.
  • Statement of Purpose: Submit a statement of purpose in the application describing your specific career goals and research interests.
  • Writing Sample: Academic writing sample, such as a master’s thesis or a sample research paper, that can show your academic writing or research skills is required.
  • Recommendations: You will need to get 3 letters of recommendation. You will be prompted to add your recommenders' email addresses. They will receive an email with a copy of the necessary Recommendation Form to fill out. They will be required to fill it out and upload it with their letters into your online application. At least two of the recommendations should be from an individual at higher education institutions who can assess your academic potential for graduate study.
