Program Requirements


The Learning Sciences master's degree requires 40 credit hours.

Course Requirements

Foundations of Learning and Cognition (Minimum of 9 Hours) (Take all 3)

Basic Statistics & Methodology (Minimum of 12 Hours) (Take all 3)

Electives (Minimum of 9 Hours) (Choose any one course from each category, 3 total)

Advanced Methodology & Statistics (Select 1)

Diversity Learning (Select 1)

Specialty Topics in Learning and Cognition (Select 1)

Learning Sciences Seminar (Minimum of 3 Hours, repeat for 3 semesters)

Thesis (Minimum of 6 Hours)

Sample Course Sequencing

The Learning Sciences Program does not currently enforce strict course sequencing throughout the program of study. A noteable exception to this is that students start out taking:

First Year:
Fall: EDPS 7010
Spring: EDPS 7020

Second Year:
Fall: EDPS 7300
Spring: EDPS 7400 

Although this is a sample program of study, individual student needs should be addressed in regular meetings with the student’s advisor.

Language Requirements

If you choose to pursue an M.A. instead of M.S., there is an additional language requirement.

  1. Candidates for the M.A. degree must be certified by the Department of World Languages & Cultures as having demonstrated “standard proficiency” in at least one foreign language.
    1. Departments may establish additional language requirements for the M.A. degree.
  2. There is no University-wide foreign-language requirement for the M.S. degree.
    1. Departments may establish their own language requirement.
  3. The major department determines the foreign language in which each candidate is required to demonstrate competence.
    1. The Language Verification form for certification is available in the Department of World Languages & Cultures.
