Q. How can I get in touch with a faculty member of the Department of Educational Psychology?
A.Contact information for faculty in our department is found under “About Us”.
Q. How can I learn more about a specific program in the department?
A.Each program has a program director and many of our programs offer online information sessions. To find out more about a specific program, go to “Our Programs,” and click on the program of interest. Contact information for the program director will be listed on the program website.
Q. I was offered admission to one of your programs. What do I do next?
A.Congratulations! First, accept our offer of admission through the Slate application portal. This sends your information to the Graduate School Admissions Office. They will process your application and may reach out to you if they need official transcripts. They will then send a welcome letter and assign you a university identification number (UNID).
You will receive additional communication from your program director who will provide you with next steps.
Q. What application materials are required?
A.Each program has slightly different requirements. Please refer to the application instructions available on the program websites.
Q. Do you require the GRE?
A.We do not require GRE Scores as part of the application process.
Q. Is there a way to waive my application fee?
A.The Department of Educational Psychology does not offer application fee waivers.
Q. What type of degree will I earn upon completion of my program?
A.Students who graduate from the Department of Educational Psychology earn B.A., B.S., M.Ed., Ed.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Educational Psychology. Those graduating with a master’s or doctorate will have an emphasis area added to their degree (e.g., School Counseling, Learning Sciences, etc.)
Q. What is your acceptance rate?
A.This varies year to year and program to program. Every application is evaluated on multiple criteria that varies by program. Please contact individual program directors to learn what they are looking for and how to be a competitive applicant.
Q. Is there a prompt for the personal statement portion of the application? Is there a word count or page limit?
A.This varies by program. If there are no specific instructions for a personal statement, you may determine the content. For example, you may want to write about your career goals, research interests, clinical interests, who or what influenced you to pursue this field of study (positive or negative influences), why you are a good fit, and what drew you to a particular faculty or program. Personal statements are typically 2 pages in length.
Q. What is the deadline to submit my application?
A.Each program has slightly different application deadlines. Please visit your program's webpage for more information pertaining to deadlines for applications.
Q. I am a newly admitted international student. What type of paperwork is required for me to attend the University of Utah?
A.Please visit the Graduate School's International Student Info. There you will find information on what visas and paperwork are required. You will also find links to the International Student & Scholar Services office, International Admissions, English Proficiency, F-1 Via Information, International Student Orientation, and Graduate Student Housing.
Q. What is the average cost per year to attend graduate school at the University of Utah?
A.This depends on several factors, including your program and residency. Fees change annually, and some classes have specific fees to cover materials and test kits. View Tuition Estimator for more information.
Q. I got my offer of admission, but I didn't receive a funding letter. Why is that?
A.Admission to the Department of Educational Psychology does not guarantee funding via assistantship. Please contact your program director for information about funding opportunities.
Q. What assistantships are available? How many hours are required? What responsibilities are involved, and is tuition credit included?
A.Some years have a plethora of assistantship offerings, and some years we have fewer assistantships available. Assistantships at the University of Utah require 20 hours of work per week in exchange for a stipend and a tuition waiver. View more about the Tuition Benefit Program.
Q. Are scholarships available?
A.Information on department and college scholarships and grants can be found on the main College of Education website.
Graduate School also has assistantships and fellowships available.
Q. I need the Director of Graduate Studies to sign my forms. Who is the Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Educational Psychology?
A.Dr. Zac Imel is the Director of Graduate Studies. Contact Lindsay Taylor to coordinate.
Q. I need to register for a class, but I keep getting a pop up saying there is an error with my registration. Can you help me?
A.Some classes may require a permission code in order to register for the course. This permission code is generated for each student and is not transferable to another student. Please contact Lindsay Taylor to coordinate.
Q. Do I have access to any travel funds to attend professional conferences or trainings?
A.Yes, graduate students in the department may have program specific funds or may apply for funds through the Graduate School.
Q. Is there a program or department handbook?
A.Yes, your program will have a program handbook outlining specific programmatic policies and procedures; the department also has a handbook outlining more general department-wide policies and procedures.
